The FIRST Program

FIRST is an acronym that stands for For Inspiration and Recognition of Science and Technology. FIRST organizes competitions for teams who design, prototype, and build a robot to do a specific task. FIRST was founded in 1989 by Dean Kamen. The organization which is based in Manchester, New Hampshire, has been an inspiration to thousands of students around the world. FIRST is supported by a network of corporations, educational and professional institutions, and individuals. Over 45,000 volunteers make FIRST happen. Overall FIRST reaches over 156,000 students;12,911 robots; 44,000 mentors; and 28,000 event volunteers.
The FIRST Mission
FIRST designs accessible, innovative programs that build not only science and technology skills and interests, but also self-confidence, leadership, and life skills.
The Divisions
FIRST has different programs for different age groups. The Junior Lego League is a program in which the "youngest budding scientists" get to show their technology skills. It is for children 6-9 years old. The FIRST Lego League is for elementary children aged 9 - 14. The FIRST Vex Challenge is a mid level robotics program for high school students. The FIRST Robotics Competition is a "varsity sport of the mind" designed for high school students.
